The H. Stepic CEE Charity and its project partner Caritas have converted a former health care centre into a Day care centre for mentally and physically disabled people. There is a massive need for such institutions in Albania as some 80 per cent of this population has never attended a school and there are almost no public institutions.
The centre is located in Arameras, a town about 20km from Tirana. The building was adapted and renewed according to the special needs of the disabled individuals. The centre offers a new home for 35 young people between 8 and 25 years and some of them have also been integrated in the working process, in spite of their disabilities. This is an important step on the way to a self-determined life and increases - apart from the feeling of freedom - also the self-esteem of those young people.
