Not far from Kharkiv, in the east of Ukraine, stands the orphanage Bohodukhiv. Until recently, 120 children and adolescents between the ages of 4 and 18, some of them with very severe disabilities, had to live there in the midst of mold, crumbling walls, and rickety, poorly nailed beds. No environment to treat serious developmental delays, respiratory diseases, neuromuscular problems, cerebral palsy, motor dysfunction, or trauma - often the condition of the needy even worsened.

At the Boarding School and sanatorium in Pushkinskiye Gory 140 children who suffer from tuberculosis and other severe lung diseases are being taken care of. They come from socially disadvantages families in Pskov, the poorest region in Russia. The desolate state of the only institution of that kind far and wide rendered it difficult to treat them appropriately. Broken beds with dirty, old mattresses and way too thin blankets delayed their healing substantially.

They are from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, have escaped war and persecution: For more and more children, mothers and unaccompanied minors, Bulgaria is one of the first stations in Europe. Meanwhile, the transit country has become their new home. Orienting themselves is a major challenge for the newcomers.

More than 500 children receive tutoring and warm meals at four shelters in Satu Mare and Baia Mare (Romania); they can wash their clothes and are provided with new clothes, as well as school supplies. Within three years of launching “Ways out of the ghetto”, we considerably reduced the number of school drop-outs and made the way to an independent future possible for the many children.

Winter in Pskov is long and especially cold, minus 30°C not a rare thing. For the children of five orphanages in the Russian region, those temperatures turn the way to school into a constant challenge. Without the necessary footgear they could not make it. With a small contribution, we managed a heartwarming winter wonder! 500 pair of winter boots make it possible for the little ones to go to class.
