Microscope for cancer research, Russia
The H. Stepic CEE Charity provided a new-generation microscope for the State Oncological Research Institute in Moscow. Thanks to the personal engagement of Mr. Pavel Gurin (CEO of ZAO Raiffeisenbank, Russia) the charitable association is able to contribute with this project to the fight against cancer. This microscope is designed to carry out cytomorphological research on various types of cancerous growths, which very often also impact children and young adults.
Cytological research, which is widely used in morphological diagnosis, is based on studying cellular material taken from the area impacted by the cancerous growth. The microscope provided by the Charity will be used to analyse material taken from various organs in order to determine the nature of the growth. In other words, the microscope represents an essential tool for the initial diagnosis of cancer in patients.
The outstanding feature of this particular microscope model is that it incorporates a camera and computer, making it possible to save all of the analysis results in digital format and to build up an archive that can be of considerable use to other researchers, and in publishing textbooks and research atlases for students.
The microscope will therefore enable Dr. Tatiana Kondratieva - a leading researcher in the laboratory of Clinical Cytology at the N. N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Eurasian Oncology Program, who will be personally in charge of the instrument - to convert her life's work into a digital format which can be systematised and used as an accessible and comprehensive data-base for present and future generations. Dr. Kondratieva will also use the microscope in the classes she teaches to young cancer researchers. |
