Jablunitsa recreation centre for children, Ukraine

In Jablunitsa, a holiday resort in Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, the H. Stepic CEE Charity worked together with the association "Kleine Herzen" and the development and relief agency "Caritas-Spes" to modernize run-down wooden houses that can be used as vacation accommodations for socially unprivileged children and juveniles. The H. Stepic CEE Charity financed the construction of one of the refurbished houses.

Thanks to the good co-operation between the organizations and their excellent contacts in the region, children in need could be provided with immediate help. Jablunitsa is situated about 200 km south of Lviv in the Carpathian National Park. The holiday village consists of 20 wooden houses, each of which can host 10 children and one supervising tutor. The wooden houses were built in 1993 with the help of a generous sponsor for children suffering from the effects of the Chernobyl catastrophe. Being originally designed to have a service life of 8-10 years, the houses were built without a foundation and their wooden floors were laid directly on the soil. As a result, the houses have decayed relatively quickly and now require total renovation.

The "Caritas-Spes" and the H. Stepic CEE Charity have now taken it on themselves to improve this situation. The village can provide health stays to around 1,000 children in need per year. Children who are eligible to stay at the resort are: sick children, children suffering from secondary effects of the Chernobyl catastrophe, orphans, children with disabilities, as well as children of single mothers and problem families. The village’s vast range of recreation activities and its well-balanced nutritional offering demonstrably improve the children’s health condition.
