Dear Sir or Madam,

as a successful banker, who spent his childhood in simple circumstances in post-war Austria, I know that happiness does not merely depend on money and assets. I also know, however, that the alleviation of material suffering contributes substantially to increasing quality of life, zest for life and life expectancy. Through the H. Stepic CEE Charity non-profit association, I wish to make a contribution towards relieving this distress.

Central and Eastern Europe is a region that has undergone massive changes in recent years, and which rates highly with foreign investors. The Austrian economy was quick to recognise the opportunities that these changes offered, to take advantage of the chances, and has been able to profit greatly from the development in this area. Above all, Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich AG and its stock exchange-listed subsidiary Raiffeisen International Bank-Holding AG have gained a reputation as a pioneer in Eastern Europe and have built up an excellent market position in the region. And I have had the privilege of being able to significantly shape and watch over this development process.

Naturally, the successful development of the region did not only produce winners. The changeover from a centrally controlled economy into a market economy demanded too high a degree of flexibility from many people. Among the losers are those that are socially disadvantaged – as is so often the case women, children and adolescents.

Not only do I owe my professional career and many successes to Central and Eastern Europe, I also greatly enjoy staying in the region. I am impressed by the area’s cultural diversity and like to concern myself with the people of the region, their enthusiasm and drive, as well as with the problems they struggle with. This corner of the world has greatly enriched my life. Therefore, on the occasion of my 60th birthday, I made it my goal to give something back to the region and the people who live in it and founded the H. Stepic CEE Charity. Donations from my friends, business partners and colleagues have helped to jump start this initiative and we are working hard to set the first projects on course. The first signs of success can already be seen. However, in order to further develop this project, we also require your help.

Please support my team and me in giving new perspectives to at least a few people who could not make it by their own efforts.

With many thanks in advance,

Yours,

Herbert Stepic
